About us
Harewood is an independent charitable educational trust set up to maintain and develop Harewood, its collections and grounds, for the public benefit. Enjoy England's Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2020. Harewood attracts over 250,000 visitors per annum and is a major venue for weddings, conferences and corporate hospitality. The House, one of the treasure houses of England, was built in the mid-18th century and has magnificent interiors by Robert Adam, furniture by Thomas Chippendale and paintings by JMW Turner, Reynolds, Titian and El Greco, among others. An Italianate Terrace, designed by Sir Charles Barry, stretches along the South Front of the House and provides stunning views of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown's landscape and lake. The collection of paintings, furniture and porcelain is as fine as any in the land, and the setting is Yorkshire’s most beautiful landscape.

This is absolutely delicious and perfectly captures what makes an away day at Harewood so special - https://harewood.org/hire/
When you're a video agency a video of one of your own events carries a certain weight of expectation. We had our annual away day and Harvey decided to capture it. He could have gone for a punchy upbeat track with some nice vox pops and some tasteful B roll from the day and made a great little highlights video. But we're filmmakers so he chose to do something a little different. Instead he decided to create a quiet, sweet, elegant little series of vignettes from the day, channelling a bit of Lost in Translation era Sofia Coppola. It gives you a feel for how we spent the day without oversharing, shows off Harewood House Trust in all its glory, and somehow feels very Manto. Have a little watch, see what you think. ps Watch out for a glimpse of a remarkable Keira Knightley impersonation by Josh Richardson. You'll have to look very hard to spot it but it's worth it.

Among our spectacular, year-long programme of Regency inspired events, workshops and concerts is Candlelit Regency, a mesmerizing evening of music by Ignite Concerts and the Ebor Quartet. The Ebor Quartet will perform a selection of Regency-era music, bringing the sounds of Austen’s time to life, alongside performing re-imagined popular songs as seen on the Netflix series Bridgerton. From Eine Kliene by Mozart to Rhianna’s Diamonds, this enchanting concert promises to complement the exhibition’s exploration of Austen’s world, immersing attendees in the elegance of the era. To celebrate the 250th anniversaries of the landscape painter JMW Turner (1775-1851) and novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817) we’re collaborating with The Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies at the University of York to present a groundbreaking new exhibition that brings together the work of author and artist for the first time, examining their unique perspectives of the British country house in the nineteenth century. Rare books, manuscripts, period costume, fashion plates, artistic tools, oil paintings and watercolours will animate the lives and contributions of Austen and Turner, and bring the Regency era to life at Harewood. To accompany the exhibition, Harewood will present an Austen and Turner inspired festival of themed events throughout the year including talks, art workshops, theatre and films. Exhibition opening 2 May - https://lnkd.in/epUPdwdG This exhibition was made possible with a grant from the #WestonLoanProgramme with Art Fund. Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England

Today we've been testing a Tramper all-terrain mobility scooter in the grounds of Harewood House Trust. We're working with the charity Outdoor Mobility to enable more people to enjoy our gardens and grounds. Harewood House is built on a hill which is great for views but not so great if you have limited mobility. We've identified several routes that will take you from the formal Terrace Garden, along our Lakeside path to our productive Walled Garden, as well as around the North Park to All Saints Church. We hope that the Trampers will be available to book from June. Thanks to Phil Wake and Trella Javanainen for helping us to make Harewood more accessible. #outdoormobility #tramper

It seems like a glitch in the Matrix that on a stunning spring day like today the Manto Films team were able to get out of the office for our annual team away day and have Harewood House more or less to ourselves. The house is closed but we booked the beautiful Steward's Room from where we were able to wander out into the gardens and roam free (which we made the most of). Honestly it's hard to imagine a more perfect venue, just 15 minutes up the road from our office. In the afternoon we split into teams and were set the challenge of recreating scenes from famous films, TV shows or paintings. The results are something quite special but in the name of saving the team's dignity I probably shouldn't share them... but just to tease you a little here are just some of the scenes that were recreated: - The twins in the corridor from The Shining (feat Sophie Bodenham and Laura Clark) - The car boot scene from Pulp Fiction (feat Stephen Lamb and Ben Dransfield) - The balcony/machine gun scene from Scarface (feat Harvey Merrin) - The poster for Jaws (feat Paul Broadie and another Manto team member whose identity has been hidden for their protection) Let your imaginations run riot. Join me, Mireille Harper, as I take over the Harewood House Trust account this week to share my experiences writing a long read about Harewood, Slavery, and the Caribbean. A bit about me: I’m an author, and in 2020, I wrote Timelines from Black History with Dorling Kindersley DK, which has sold over 50,000 copies worldwide. I’ve also contributed to three other children’s history books: Timelines of Everyone, The Black History Book, and Migrations. As a second-generation Jamaican, I’ve spent my life exploring both personal and collective histories. This week, I’m diving into the painful truths behind British institutions, including Harewood House. Its connections to the Caribbean and slavery must be acknowledged and understood. This history resonates deeply with me as someone of Caribbean heritage, and engaging with it is crucial for reckoning with the past and understanding how legacies of exploitation continue to shape us. The long read explores Harewood’s ties to slavery, the Lascelles family’s plantations, the resistance of enslaved people, and Harewood’s ongoing work to address its history. It’s a difficult but necessary read, and I hope it encourages us all to confront these painful truths that must not be forgotten. Over the next few days, I’ll share more insights from my research and how we can reckon with painful histories through reflection, learning, and discovery. I invite you to join me on this journey. https://lnkd.in/eAiiWpyp
