Yorkshire's most vibrant country home.

About us

Harewood is an independent charitable educational trust set up to maintain and develop Harewood, its collections and grounds, for the public benefit. Enjoy England's Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2020. Harewood attracts over 250,000 visitors per annum and is a major venue for weddings, conferences and corporate hospitality. The House, one of the treasure houses of England, was built in the mid-18th century and has magnificent interiors by Robert Adam, furniture by Thomas Chippendale and paintings by JMW Turner, Reynolds, Titian and El Greco, among others. An Italianate Terrace, designed by Sir Charles Barry, stretches along the South Front of the House and provides stunning views of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown's landscape and lake. The collection of paintings, furniture and porcelain is as fine as any in the land, and the setting is Yorkshire’s most beautiful landscape.

  • Great British Food Festival returns to Harewood this bank holiday weekend. Take a good helping of local and artisan producers, a big serving of tasty hot food vendors, add a dash of bars, a sprinkling of children’s activities, a dollop of top chef demos, stir in some competitions, with lashings of excellent live music, and mix together to make a fabulous foodie family day out! The main chef demo area hosts great local and TV chefs and all demos are free (as part of your admission ticket) to enter, so everyone can pick up top foodie tips! There are also regular artisan foodie talks to get involved with. The event attracts lots of producers showcasing the best in local, seasonal and specialty food and drink, and it’s a great opportunity to get a real taste of the best of Great British produce. With Great Britain’s amazing mix of cultures and cuisines, you can try some more exotic elements or the best local burgers and sausages for those with more traditional tastes! After you’ve done your foodie shopping, sit and enjoy tasty, hot food and a refreshing drink (or two), with great live music in the stunning surroundings of Harewood House. The perfect recipe for a fun, foodie day out for the whole family! Pre booking essential, this is a very popular event - https://lnkd.in/dUUEMKK

  • We're proud to announce a new partnership with the EnChroma, Inc. Colour Accessibility Program™, becoming the first historic country house and museum in the UK to offer specially engineered EnChroma glasses for people with colour blindness. This initiative enables visitors with red-green colour vision deficiency, a condition affecting 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women, to experience the full vibrancy of Harewood’s collections, exhibitions, and interiors like never before. Glasses are available to hire for free, including options for children and adults, as well as a pair that fits over prescription glasses. The launch coincides with the opening of Austen & Turner: A Country House Encounter, allowing all visitors to appreciate the exhibition’s full palette and nuanced details. Visitors can also explore the exhibition through a range of multi-sensory resources. Tactile pieces by artist Sam Metz invite closer engagement with key objects, while evocative audio descriptions, written by Chikodi Nwauwu and voiced by members of the Harewood House Trust team, offer rich storytelling for all to enjoy. In partnership with TOPP LANGUAGE SOLUTIONS LIMITED, a series of British Sign Language (BSL) interpretations have also been created, offering further ways for visitors to connect with the exhibition. Large print guides are available, and sensory backpacks specially designed to support visitors who may experience sensory overload, can be borrowed from the Entrance Hall. These initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible experience for all, ensuring that every visitor can enjoy the full colour, texture and story of this vibrant country house.

  • We can't remember the last time we had a reaction to an invitation as overwhelming as this one. The lure of both Austen and Turner, combined with national loans from private lenders and organisations including Tate, Royal Academy of Arts, The British Library and Jane Austen's House, some of which have never been seen in the north before, made the private view for Austen & Turner: A Country House Encounter something of a golden ticket.  Guests had the opportunity to meet all those responsible for the development of this exhibition as well as hearing from our CEO, Rachel Crewes and Professor Chloe Wigston Smith on behalf of the Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies at the University of York. This was made even more special by Writer in Residence for Harewood House - Dr Rommi Smith - who kindly performed one of her incredible pieces written to accompany the exhibition. Guests then enjoyed the exhibition and a private view of loans such as Turner’s North of England sketchbook (Tate), which he used to record views of the Harewood estate and his hand-made travelling watercolour paint set (Royal Academy of Arts). Austen’s life and literary works are represented by rarely shown handwritten manuscripts and published works including the handwritten manuscript of her final novel, Sanditon (King's College, Cambridge). All this alongside contemporary commissions by Lela Harris and Dr Rommi Smith reflecting and responding to the themes of the exhibition. If you didn't get this golden ticket, don't despair, as the exhibition runs until 19 October 2025 -https://lnkd.in/epUPdwdG The exhibition is a significant collaborative exhibition and research project between Harewood House Trust and The Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies at the University of York, with advice and curatorial support from independent curators, Jade Foster and Diane Howse. It was made possible using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and with a grant from the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund. The private view was generously sponsored by our partner, Nyetimber.
